Ethereum Founder Vitalik Buterin's Account Was Allegedly Stolen

It is claimed that the X account of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin was compromised. According to leading blockchain researcher ZachXBT, this incident led to victims collectively losing over $691,000 after clicking on a malicious link. The incident caused controversy amid allegations that it may have occurred due to Vitalik Buterin's high profile and inadequate security measures.

Thousands of Dollars Lost

The post in question was later deleted and published on Buterin's account, claiming to be celebrating the arrival of Proto-Danksharding on Ethereum. By sharing a malicious link to an allegedly available free NFT, the hacker convinced victims to link their wallets and ultimately stole all their funds. Additionally, this incident led Ethereum developer Khoo, better known as 'Bokky Poobah' on X, to claim that he had suffered losses on his CryptoPunk NFT collection.

Vitalik's father, Dmitry Buterin, announced in a post on X on September 9 that his son's account was compromised:

"“Ignore this post apparently Vitalik has been hacked. “Working to restore access.”"
