Hackers are definitely not giving us any respite, if you use Windows, you could be at risk of being a victim of a new malware that takes advantage of an operating system tool to mine cryptocurrencies without your consent (Although according to some sources it was detected for the first time in 2020 ). This is an attack that uses "Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)", an interface that allows administrators to manage computer resources and configurations.
The malware, called - WMIHACKER -, infiltrates the computer through an executable file that is downloaded when visiting malicious websites or opening infected emails. Once installed, the malware creates a malicious script in the WMI that runs every time the system boots. The script connects to a remote server and receives instructions to mine cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum or Monero, using the power of your CPU and GPU.
The problem is that this malware is very difficult to detect and remove as it hides in the WMI, which is a legitimate part of Windows. Additionally, malware can modify the system registry to avoid being blocked by antivirus or firewalls. Malware can also steal personal information, such as passwords, banking details, or private keys from your cryptocurrency wallets.
The most important thing is to be careful with what you download and open on your computer. Do not visit suspicious websites or open emails from unknown senders. It is also advisable to update your operating system and your security programs frequently, to avoid possible vulnerabilities. Make backup copies of your important files and cryptocurrencies, just in case. And of course, it obviously makes sense to check your PC with a security tool like Malwarebytes AdwCleaner or the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool to make sure you have no traces of malware or other threats on your system.
