Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, has surprised the world with the announcement of his new virtual assistant based on artificial intelligence: Meta AI. It is a chatbot capable of conversing with users as if it were a real person, offering them updated information from the Internet thanks to the collaboration with Microsoft Bing, the most used search engine in the world.
Meta AI is Zuckerberg's answer to ChatGPT, the popular virtual assistant developed by OpenAI, the nonprofit founded by Elon Musk and other tech leaders. ChatGPT has become a viral phenomenon for its ability to generate witty, fun and sometimes surprising answers to users' questions.
Zuckerberg presented Meta AI at the Meta Connect event, a conference for virtual and augmented reality developers held at Meta's headquarters in Menlo Park, California. There he has shown some of the functions of Meta AI, such as the creation of digital stickers from written texts, the editing of photos with verbal commands or the interaction with virtual characters that can help users in various tasks.
This artificial intelligence is integrated with Meta messaging applications, such as WhatsApp and Messenger, and also with Ray Ban Stories smart glasses, which allow you to record videos or photos, broadcast live, listen to music and communicate with the virtual assistant. In addition, Meta AI can be used with the new Quest 3 virtual reality headset, which will be released in October this year.
Zuckerberg has stated that Meta AI is one more step towards building the metaverse, a virtual space where people will be able to interact with holographic versions of their friends or coworkers and with artificial intelligence bots designed to assist them. "Soon the physical and the digital will come together in what we call the metaverse", he said.
Unfortunately for users of these platforms, Meta AI will only initially be available starting September 27 for a limited group of users in the United States, but is expected to expand to other countries and regions in the coming months.
