Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? This is one of the most intriguing questions in the world of cryptocurrencies, which has gone unanswered for more than a decade. The name of Satoshi Nakamoto is listed as the author of the famous whitepaper that first described the protocol for Bitcoin, the first censorship-resistant, decentralized digital currency. However, no one knows for sure who is behind that pseudonym, not even if it is a single person or a group.
Over the years, various hypotheses have been considered about the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, from businessmen, mathematicians, computer scientists and even intelligence agents. Some would-be candidates have denied being the creator of Bitcoin, while others have tried to claim the title without providing convincing evidence. But there is a theory that has gained strength recently, and that points to a character as fascinating as it is sinister: Paul Le Roux.
Paul Le Roux is a South African programmer and criminal who was the mastermind of an international empire of illegal drug and arms trafficking, which made him one of the most wanted criminals by the US authorities. Le Roux was captured in 2012 by the DEA and since then has been collaborating as an informant to reduce his sentence. But what does Le Roux have to do with Bitcoin?
The connection between Le Roux and Satoshi Nakamoto is based on a series of clues and coincidences that have been compiled by various researchers and journalists. These are some of the arguments that support this hypothesis:
📌 He is an expert in cryptography and programming, who developed his own encryption software called E4M (Encryption for the Masses) in 1998, the same year the bitcoin.org domain was registered.
📌 He was politically motivated to create Bitcoin, as he was a radical libertarian who opposed government control of money and communications. In fact, its E4M software included a mission statement stating: "Governments are increasingly reliant on electronic interception as a means of collecting information about their citizens (...) Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age". This statement is similar to the message that Satoshi Nakamoto included in the first Bitcoin block: "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks" banks), a reference to the economic and social context that led to the birth of Bitcoin.
📌 He had the financial and human resources to create Bitcoin, since he had a global network of programmers, hackers, mercenaries and hit men working for him. In addition, it is known that Le Roux invested in projects related to gold mining and the development of drones, which demonstrates his interest in technological innovation.
📌 He disappeared from the public scene in 2012, the same year that Satoshi Nakamoto stopped communicating with the Bitcoin community. Some believe that Le Roux was arrested by the DEA thanks to the collaboration of Craig Wright, another supposed candidate to be Satoshi Nakamoto, who would have provided information on Le Roux in exchange for immunity. Wright also claimed to possess an encrypted file containing the original Bitcoin source code, which could only be opened by Le Roux.
📌 Recently, someone with access to the private key of Hal Finney, the first recipient of a Bitcoin transaction sent by Satoshi Nakamoto, wrote a message stating: "This transaction was made by Paul Le Roux to Hal Finney on the 12th of January 2009 #bitcoin". Although this message could be fake or the result of a hack, some interpret it as proof that Le Roux is Satoshi Nakamoto, or at least that he was involved in the project.
These are just some of the arguments that support the theory that Paul Le Roux is Satoshi Nakamoto, but there are many more. However, there are also many doubts and contradictions that question this hypothesis. For example, why hasn't he claimed the million-plus bitcoin fortune that is attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto? Why hasn't he used his crypto genius to escape justice or negotiate a better situation? Why hasn't he revealed his identity as Satoshi Nakamoto to gain recognition or influence in the cryptocurrency world?

📌 E4M: A free and open source disk encryption software for Microsoft Windows, which he released in 1998. E4M allowed users to protect their data from possible intrusions or espionage, and was based on the Blowfish algorithm. Le Roux wrote the code and documentation for E4M, as well as a libertarian mission statement that accompanied the program.
📌 TrueCrypt: A disk encryption software derived from E4M, which was released in 2004 and became very popular among Windows, Linux and Mac OS X users. Although Le Roux denied being involved in TrueCrypt, some experts believe that he was the original author or at least one of the project collaborators. TrueCrypt offered more options and features than E4M, such as AES encryption and hidden volume. TrueCrypt stopped development in 2014, under mysterious circumstances.
📌 RX Limited: A global network of online pharmacies that sold prescription drugs, especially opioids, to customers around the world. Le Roux founded RX Limited in 2004, taking advantage of legal loopholes and a lack of regulation in the electronic commerce of pharmaceuticals. RX Limited generated hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for Le Roux, and played a significant role in the rise of opioid use and addiction in the United States.
📌 Criminal cartel: An illicit empire that encompassed drug trafficking, weapons, gold and military technology. He expanded his criminal activities beginning in 2007, when he moved to the Philippines and recruited ex-military personnel, mercenaries, and hit men to work for him. Le Roux operated from his laptop, using his own encryption and communication software, and ordered assassinations, kidnappings, bribery, and extortion of his subordinates. He trafficked cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and other illegal substances, and also tried to buy surface-to-air missiles and submarines from North Korea.
The truth is that no one knows for sure who Satoshi Nakamoto is, not even if he is still alive or dead. Perhaps we will never know, or perhaps one day definitive proof will appear that will solve the mystery. What we do know is that Satoshi Nakamoto created BITCOIN 💖, a masterpiece of technology and economics, which has changed the world forever. AND THAT'S WHAT REALLY MATTERS.
