Last September 9, the X (formerly Twitter) account of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin was hacked by an unknown hacker who took advantage of his followers' trust to steal more than $691,000 in cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFT) from them. The attack came via a malicious link promising a free NFT commemorating the launch of "Proto-Danksharding" on Ethereum, a term invented by the hacker. Upon clicking the link, victims connected their wallets to a fraudulent website that emptied their funds.
Among those affected is Ethereum developer Bok Khoo, better known as Bokky Poobah on X, who lost several NFTs from his CryptoPunk collection, one of the most popular and valuable on the market. According to blockchain researcher ZachXBT, the most expensive NFT stolen so far is CryptoPunk #3983, valued at 153.62 ETH, equivalent to about $250,543. ZachXBT has been actively reporting on the hacker's activities and has shared an address where the stolen funds can be viewed.
Vitalik Buterin's father, Dmitry Buterin, confirmed the hack into his own X account and said his son was working to regain access. However, some users questioned Vitalik Buterin's operational security and asked him to take responsibility and compensate those affected. Others defended the Ethereum co-founder, pointing out that he could have been the victim of SIM swapping or an internal X compromise.
This incident highlights the risks that cryptocurrency and NFT users face on social media, where scammers and hackers who try to take advantage of people's naivety or greed abound. Although on many occasions I am reiterative in my publications with the precautionary measures that we must take to avoid falling into these traps, always remember:
📌 Verify the authenticity of the accounts that follow or interact with us. Many times, hackers create fake accounts that imitate famous people or projects, using similar names or images. It is important to look at the username, creation date, number of followers and official verification (if any) of the accounts.
📌 Do not click on suspicious or unknown links that are sent to us by direct message or that appear in publications. Before accessing a link, you can use a service like VirusTotal to analyze it and see if it is safe or not.
📌 Never share the private keys or seed phrases of our wallets with anyone. These data are personal and non-transferable and allow access to our funds. If someone asks us to reveal them, it is probably a robbery attempt.
📌 Use a hardware wallet or a mobile or desktop wallet with a good reputation and security. These options are more secure than web wallets, which can be vulnerable to hacking or phishing.
📌 Activate two-factor authentication (2FA) on all accounts that allow it, especially on social networks and sharing platforms. This measure adds an extra layer of security by requiring an additional code or confirmation to access accounts.
